Standing two-and-a-half metres tall, arms stretched out to the
Heavens and fixed to the seabed, some 17 metres beneath the sun-kissed
surface, Christ of the Abyss is a sight that few get to see. Encrusted
with barnacles and surrounded by lurking sea creatures, the bronze
statue commemorates Dario Gonzatti, the first Italian to use scuba
equipment, who died in these waters whilst diving in 1947. It’s calm and
it’s quiet down here in the depths. It’s also rather creepy.
Found deep in the Mediterranean, between Camogli and Portofino on the
beautiful Italian Riviera, you’ll need to be an accomplished diver to
make it to see Christ of the Abyss. This sight may be close to Italy’s
top tourist spots, but beneath the waves the atmosphere changes in
dramatic fashion and those courageous enough to take the plunge often
find the experience to be still and haunting.
